Ujjain Omkareshwar Tour Package – MP Vacation Indore

Ujjain Omkareshwar Tour Package: Complete Itinerary and Travel Guide

A Ujjain Omkareshwar tour package covers darshan at two of the 12 Jyotirlingas in one trip – Mahakaleshwar in Ujjain and Omkareshwar on the Narmada river. The distance from Ujjain to Omkareshwar is approximately 130 km (2.5 to 3 hours by road). A same-day tour is possible with an early start, though the journey is long. Packages starting from Indore cover both cities and are operated by MP Vacation Indore with private vehicles and local guidance.

There are 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva across India. Two of them are in Madhya Pradesh. Mahakaleshwar in Ujjain is the only south-facing Jyotirlinga. Omkareshwar, located on an island in the Narmada river, is one of the most serene pilgrimage sites in the country. Visiting both in one well-planned trip is something many devotees and families carry as a long-held wish.

A Ujjain Omkareshwar tour package gives you the structure to do this without the guesswork. You get private transport, a planned itinerary, and a guide who knows the temple timings, queue patterns, and the best way to sequence your darshan so nothing feels rushed. Whether you are starting from Indore or beginning your day in Ujjain itself, a well-organised tour makes a significant difference on a pilgrimage of this nature.

This guide covers everything you need to know: the itinerary, what is included, what to expect at each stop, the best time to go, and honest answers to common questions.

Why Choose a Ujjain Omkareshwar Tour Package?

Significance of Visiting Two Jyotirlingas in One Trip

In Hindu tradition, the 12 Jyotirlingas are considered the most sacred manifestations of Lord Shiva. Pilgrims who wish to complete the Jyotirlinga circuit often begin with the two closest ones. Mahakaleshwar and Omkareshwar are about 130 km apart and can realistically be visited in one extended day or over two days. The spiritual significance of visiting both in a single journey is substantial – this is considered a meaningful double darshan that many families plan for years.

Convenience of Combining Temple Visits

Ujjain and Omkareshwar are not large tourist towns with abundant public transport options. Getting between them independently – managing an early morning temple visit at Mahakaleshwar, then a road journey to Omkareshwar, temple entry, the optional island parikrama, and a return journey – involves a lot of moving parts. A package handles all of this. The vehicle waits, the driver knows the route, and you are not worrying about the next step while you are inside the temple.

Private Transport and Travel Planning

Both Ujjain and Omkareshwar have limited parking and narrow approach roads near the main temples. Travelling in a private vehicle with a driver who has done this route before makes a considerable practical difference. MP Vacation Indore operates this tour with comfortable private cabs and tempo travellers depending on group size, with door-to-door pickup and drop.

Who Should Consider a Combined Pilgrimage Tour?

This package is well suited for families travelling with senior citizens or children, small groups of 2 to 8 people, devotees from outside Madhya Pradesh visiting on a limited schedule, and anyone based in Indore who wants to cover both Jyotirlingas efficiently. If you have 1 to 2 days and want to do the darshan properly rather than hurriedly, a structured package is the right choice.

Ujjain Omkareshwar One-Day Tour Itinerary

Early Morning – Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga Darshan

The day starts early. If you are travelling from Indore, your vehicle will pick you up between 4:00 and 5:00 AM. If you are starting from Ujjain, the pickup is typically around 5:30 to 6:00 AM, allowing you to reach the temple at a reasonable hour before the queues build.

Mahakaleshwar Temple is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas and the only south-facing one. It is situated in the heart of Ujjain city, adjacent to the Rudra Sagar lake and the Mahakal Lok corridor. Darshan of the main Jyotirlinga is done in the sanctum. Lines can be long during peak seasons and festival periods, so an early start is always advised.

The Bhasma Aarti at Mahakaleshwar is a separate early morning ritual (4:00 to 6:00 AM) that requires advance online registration at shrimahakaleshwar.com. It is not part of the standard package but can be added if you plan ahead. If you are attending Bhasma Aarti, your pickup from Indore would be around 1:30 to 2:00 AM the night before.

After Mahakaleshwar darshan, you may also briefly visit the Mahakal Lok corridor before departing for Omkareshwar.

Travel from Ujjain to Omkareshwar

The road distance from Ujjain to Omkareshwar is approximately 130 km. The most common route goes via Indore (NH 52 and NH 347B) or via Dewas and Khandwa road. Travel time is typically 2.5 to 3 hours depending on traffic and road conditions.

This is one of the most important factors to plan for. The drive to Omkareshwar is long and the temple queues there can also be unpredictable. Leaving Ujjain before 9:00 AM is strongly recommended to arrive at Omkareshwar with enough time for a relaxed darshan.

Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga Darshan

Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga is located inside the Shri Omkareshwar Temple on Mandhata Island in the Narmada river. The island is shaped like the Hindu symbol Om when seen from above, which is the origin of the name Omkareshwar.

The Jyotirlinga here is called Omkareshwar or Amaleshwar depending on the tradition. The temple is ancient and sits in a dense cluster of shrines, steps, and ghats on the island. The atmosphere is very different from Mahakaleshwar – quieter, more compact, and deeply connected to the sound and sight of the Narmada river flowing around the island.

The approach to the temple is on foot after parking. You will cross the Narmada on a bridge and walk into the temple complex. Inside, the main sanctum houses the Jyotirlinga. Darshan time varies but plan for at least 45 minutes to 1.5 hours including the walk in and out.

Visit Mamleshwar Temple

Mamleshwar Temple is located on the south bank of the Narmada river, directly opposite the Omkareshwar island. Most pilgrims include Mamleshwar as part of their Omkareshwar visit because both shrines together are considered one of the 12 Jyotirlinga sites by some traditions. (There is a long-standing debate among scholars about whether Omkareshwar and Mamleshwar are one Jyotirlinga or two. Most pilgrims visit both to be complete.)

The temple is accessible from the main Omkareshwar parking area. It is on the riverbank side and the walk is easy. The darshan is usually quicker here than at the main island temple.

Narmada River and Omkareshwar Island

After darshan, if time allows, the Narmada river experience at Omkareshwar is worth a few minutes. The ghats are beautiful and relatively uncrowded compared to the main temple. You can sit by the river, offer a prayer, and take in the atmosphere of one of India’s most sacred rivers flowing around a Jyotirlinga island.

The full parikrama (circumambulation) of Mandhata Island is approximately 7 km and takes 2 to 3 hours on foot. This is generally not possible on a same-day tour from Ujjain given the time constraints. If the parikrama is important to you, an overnight stay at Omkareshwar or a two-day itinerary is recommended.

Return Journey to Ujjain or Indore

The return journey begins in the early to mid afternoon depending on how long the darshan took. If returning to Ujjain, the drive takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours and you should be back by evening.

If your package started from Indore, the return to Indore will add another 1.5 hours after Ujjain, with expected drop-off between 7:00 and 9:00 PM depending on traffic.

Please note that both Mahakaleshwar and Omkareshwar are popular pilgrimages and queues can be unpredictable, especially during festivals, weekends, or Shravan. The return time may vary accordingly.

Which Temples Are Covered in the Ujjain Omkareshwar Tour?

The standard itinerary covers the following:

  • Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga – the main Jyotirlinga in Ujjain, south-facing, one of the 12 sacred Shiva shrines in India
  • Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga – the island Jyotirlinga on the Narmada river in Omkareshwar
  • Mamleshwar Temple – on the south bank of the Narmada, typically included alongside Omkareshwar

Optional stops where time permits:

  • Harsiddhi Mata Temple (Ujjain) – one of the 51 Shakti Peeths, near Mahakaleshwar
  • Bada Ganesh Temple (Ujjain) – just outside the Mahakaleshwar complex, often included en route

Optional stops are subject to available time after the main darshan and travel. They are not guaranteed unless specifically confirmed at the time of booking.

Ujjain Omkareshwar Tour Package Cost

MP Vacation Indore does not publish fixed tour prices online because the final cost depends on several factors that vary by group and travel date. Here is what affects the price:

  • Group size – cost per person decreases for larger groups sharing the vehicle
  • Vehicle type – sedan for 1 to 4 people, SUV for up to 6, tempo traveller for 7 to 12
  • Starting point – a package from Indore covering Ujjain and Omkareshwar involves more distance than one starting from Ujjain
  • Travel date – weekend and festival dates (Shravan, Mahashivratri, Navratri) may attract different rates
  • Additional stops or customisation – adding overnight stay, extra temples, or a second day changes the price

The package cost covers vehicle, driver, fuel, and toll charges. It does not cover temple entry fees (most Jyotirlinga temples have no mandatory entry fee), puja or ritual charges, prasad, donations, meals, or personal expenses.

Is It Possible to Visit Ujjain and Omkareshwar in One Day?

Yes, it is possible – but it requires an early start and realistic expectations about what the day involves.

If you start from Ujjain at 6:00 AM and Mahakaleshwar darshan takes 1 to 1.5 hours, you can be on the road to Omkareshwar by 8:00 to 9:00 AM. The drive takes 2.5 to 3 hours. You reach Omkareshwar around 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Darshan at Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga and Mamleshwar typically takes 1.5 to 2 hours. A short break for lunch and you are back on the road by 2:00 to 3:00 PM, arriving in Ujjain by 5:00 to 6:00 PM.

This is doable but it is a long day. You will be in the vehicle for 5 to 6 hours across the day. Temple queues, especially during festival periods, can add significant time at either end.

For families with senior citizens, people who prefer a slower pace, or devotees who want to do a proper parikrama at Omkareshwar, a two-day itinerary is a much better choice. An overnight stay in either Ujjain or Omkareshwar (or both) makes the experience far more comfortable and meaningful.

If you are adding the Bhasma Aarti at Mahakaleshwar (which starts at 4:00 AM), a same-day Omkareshwar visit becomes very tiring. In that case, plan for at least two days or split the darshan across different trips.

Best Time to Plan a Ujjain Omkareshwar Pilgrimage

October to March – Most Comfortable

The weather in Madhya Pradesh between October and March is pleasant for travel. Temperatures are manageable and the long drive between Ujjain and Omkareshwar is comfortable. This is the best window for a relaxed pilgrimage, especially for families and senior travellers.

Shravan (July – August) – Spiritual Peak, Very Crowded

Shravan is the most sacred month for Shiva devotees and both Mahakaleshwar and Omkareshwar see enormous crowds during this period, particularly on Shravan Mondays. If you are visiting during Shravan, expect very long queues and plan your travel accordingly. Advance booking for vehicles and accommodation is essential.

Mahashivratri – Single Most Crowded Day

Mahashivratri draws the largest single-day crowds at both temples. Darshan queues can stretch for several hours. If you wish to visit on Mahashivratri, plan to arrive very early and be prepared for a long wait. This is not recommended for a one-day combined tour.

Simhastha Kumbh 2028 – Plan Well Ahead

The next Simhastha Kumbh Mela at Ujjain runs from 27 March to 27 May 2028. This is a once-in-12-years event drawing tens of millions of pilgrims. Many devotees plan a Kumbh visit alongside an Omkareshwar darshan. Advance planning and early booking is essential for 2028 travel. MP Vacation Indore is preparing Kumbh 2028 packages.

Summer (April – June) – Avoid if Possible

Summer temperatures in Madhya Pradesh can exceed 40 degrees Celsius. A long road trip and outdoor temple visits in peak summer are uncomfortable, especially for children and elderly travellers. If you must travel in summer, schedule all temple visits before 10:00 AM.

Travel Tips for Ujjain and Omkareshwar

  • Confirm temple timings before your departure date – both Mahakaleshwar and Omkareshwar have multiple darshan sessions and the timings can change during festivals
  • Arrange Bhasma Aarti registration separately at shrimahakaleshwar.com well in advance – this is not walk-in and must be booked online
  • Wear comfortable, modest clothing – both temples require covered shoulders and legs; shorts and sleeveless tops are not permitted inside the sanctum
  • Carry a government photo ID – required for Bhasma Aarti entry and useful at some VIP darshan counters
  • Mobile phones and cameras are not allowed inside the main sanctum at Mahakaleshwar – use the cloakroom facility at the temple
  • Allow extra time for queues – even a 30-minute queue estimate at a busy Jyotirlinga can stretch to 2 hours during peak periods
  • Carry cash – Omkareshwar has limited ATM availability and some small prasad shops and dhabas near the temple do not accept UPI
  • Confirm vehicle pickup time, driver’s number, and drop-off arrangement before departure – good communication with your driver avoids unnecessary waiting
  • Book accommodation in advance if you plan an overnight stay at Omkareshwar or Ujjain, especially during Shravan and festival periods

Frequently Asked Questions – Ujjain Omkareshwar Tour Package

Q: Can Ujjain and Omkareshwar be covered in one day?

A: Yes, it is possible to visit both Ujjain and Omkareshwar in one day with an early start. Mahakaleshwar darshan in the morning followed by a 2.5 to 3 hour drive to Omkareshwar allows for Jyotirlinga darshan and a return by evening. However, it is a long day and is not comfortable for senior citizens or those who prefer a relaxed pace. A two-day itinerary is recommended for a more comfortable pilgrimage.

Q: How far is Omkareshwar from Ujjain?

A: Omkareshwar is approximately 130 km from Ujjain by road. The most common route goes via Indore or via the Dewas-Khandwa road. Travel time is approximately 2.5 to 3 hours depending on traffic and road conditions.

Q: Which temples are included in the tour package?

A: The standard Ujjain Omkareshwar tour package covers Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga in Ujjain, Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga on Mandhata Island, and Mamleshwar Temple on the south bank of the Narmada. Optional stops such as Harsiddhi Mata Temple or Bada Ganesh Temple in Ujjain may be added where time permits.

Q: Is a private cab available for the Ujjain Omkareshwar tour?

A: Yes. MP Vacation Indore operates the Ujjain Omkareshwar tour exclusively in private vehicles. Options include AC sedans for smaller groups and tempo travellers for groups of up to 12. There is no shared or bus-based option – all tours are private.

Q: Can senior citizens take this pilgrimage tour?

A: Yes. The tour is suitable for senior citizens, though a two-day itinerary is strongly recommended rather than a single long day. At Mahakaleshwar, senior citizen and divyangjan darshan queues are shorter and better managed. At Omkareshwar, the walk into the main temple from the parking area is on foot and involves some steps. A walking stick or assistance should be arranged if needed.

Q: Is Bhasma Aarti included in the package?

A: No. The Bhasma Aarti at Mahakaleshwar is not included in the standard package. It requires separate online registration at shrimahakaleshwar.com and must be booked well in advance. If you wish to attend Bhasma Aarti, the tour pickup from Indore would need to be around 1:30 to 2:00 AM to reach Ujjain by 3:30 AM. MP Vacation Indore can help plan the Bhasma Aarti logistics on request.

Q: Are meals and temple puja charges included?

A: No. Meals are at your own cost. There are good local restaurants and dhabas en route and near both temples. Temple prasad and puja samagri are available at shops near the temples and are also at your own cost. The package covers vehicle, driver, fuel, and toll charges only.

Q: Can I customise the Ujjain Omkareshwar itinerary?

A: Yes. MP Vacation Indore offers customised itineraries. You can add an overnight stay, include Bhasma Aarti, combine the tour with Maheshwar or Indore sightseeing, or split it across two days for a more comfortable experience. Contact us at +91-7898355153 to discuss your requirements.
