The Most Popular MP Pilgrimage – Done Right
Covering both Jyotirlingas of Madhya Pradesh in two days is not just possible — it is the most perfectly designed pilgrimage circuit in Central India. The two temples are 80 km apart. One is on a river island (Omkareshwar), one is in an ancient city (Mahakaleshwar). One has the most serene boat ride in MP; the other has the most intense pre-dawn ritual in all of India.
The key to doing this itinerary well is sequencing: Omkareshwar first (Day 1), Mahakaleshwar second (Day 2 at 4 AM). Here is exactly how to plan it.
Pre-Trip Checklist
- Register for Bhasma Aarti at Mahakaleshwar (mahakaleshwar.nic.in) — at least 15 days in advance
- Book your overnight stay at Omkareshwar — guesthouse or hotel near the temple
- Inform your driver of the 3:30 AM Day 2 departure — confirm the night before
- Carry sufficient cash — both Omkareshwar and Ujjain market areas are limited for UPI
- Pack: comfortable footwear, a light jacket (nights can be cool), traditional attire for darshan

Common Mistakes to Avoid
- NOT registering Bhasma Aarti in advance — you will be turned away at the gate
- Planning to ‘rest’ at Ujjain instead of continuing on Day 2 — the Bhasma Aarti requires you to be there at 4 AM, which means leaving Omkareshwar by 3:30 AM
- Visiting Omkareshwar in the afternoon — morning darshan is significantly less crowded
- Not carrying cash — both temples have limited digital payment options
- Forgetting to book the Omkareshwar overnight stay — peak season rooms fill quickly
What Makes This Itinerary Work
The Day 1 afternoon rest at Omkareshwar is critical — after a long morning of darshan and boat rides, you need energy for the 3:30 AM departure on Day 2. Pilgrims who try to pack too many activities into Day 1 often arrive at Bhasma Aarti exhausted.
The Omkareshwar overnight stay also gives you the Sandhya Aarti at sunset — one of the most beautiful experiences in the entire itinerary — something you cannot get on a day trip.
