Harsiddhi Temple Ujjain Timings & Shakti Peeth Guide

Harsiddhi – The Shakti Who Fulfils Every Wish

Of all the temples in the sacred city of Ujjain, Harsiddhi Mata is the one that tends to surprise visitors most. It is smaller than the vast Mahakaleshwar complex. It has less national media attention than Bhasma Aarti. But for the people of Ujjain — and for the Maratha empire that patronised it for centuries — Harsiddhi is the most powerful goddess in the city.

“Harsiddhi” means “She who fulfils wishes perfectly” — and for 1,500 years, devotees have come to this temple with their deepest prayers, trusting in the Mata’s power to make them real. The temple’s Shakti Peeth status (among the 51 most sacred goddess sites in India) and its legendary deepmal lamp pillars make it not just religiously significant but visually extraordinary — particularly during Navratri.

Why Harsiddhi is One of the 51 Shakti Peeths

The 51 Shakti Peeths are the most sacred sites of the goddess Shakti in India, each associated with a body part of Sati that fell to earth after Lord Vishnu dismembered her with the Sudarshana Chakra to console the grief-stricken Shiva, who had been carrying her dead body.

At Harsiddhi in Ujjain, the elbow (or in some accounts, the upper lip) of Sati is said to have fallen. The presiding goddess here is Harsiddhi (an aspect of Chandika/Durga), and her consort is Maharudra (Shiva).

The Harsiddhi temple at Ujjain is considered especially powerful because the temple sits within the Mahakaleshwar Kshetra — the sacred zone presided over by Lord Mahakal — making it a rare convergence of Shaiva and Shakti energies.

The Deepmal – Harsiddhi’s Most Spectacular Feature

What makes Harsiddhi visually unlike any other temple in Madhya Pradesh is the presence of two massive deepmal pillars. Each pillar is a towering metal column studded with hundreds of oil lamp holders — and on special occasions, particularly during Navratri, all of them are lit simultaneously.

When both deepmal pillars ignite at dusk, the effect is extraordinary: two columns of golden fire rising against the night sky, reflected in the temple courtyard below. The sight draws thousands of devotees for both Navratri periods (Chaitra and Sharad). It is one of the most visually spectacular religious moments anywhere in Madhya Pradesh.

How to Reach Harsiddhi from Mahakaleshwar

Harsiddhi is just 500 metres from the Mahakaleshwar temple complex — a 5–7 minute walk through the old bazaar area of Ujjain. Most pilgrims visit both temples in the same morning or afternoon darshan round.

  • Walk south from Mahakaleshwar temple gate through the market
  • Follow signs to “Harsiddhi Mata Temple” — well signposted in Ujjain
  • Auto-rickshaw from Mahakaleshwar: ₹15–20

The Story of Vikramaditya and Harsiddhi

The legendary king Vikramaditya — whose name is synonymous with wisdom, justice, and bravery in Indian tradition — is said to have been a great devotee of Harsiddhi Mata. One of the most famous stories in Ujjain’s oral history describes how Vikramaditya offered his own head to the goddess eleven times, and each time she restored it. So pleased was she with his devotion that she granted him the boon of becoming the greatest emperor of his age.

Whether this story is literal history or mythological narrative, it captures the temple’s reputation: this is the goddess you approach with your most impossible prayers.

Navratri at Harsiddhi – The Best Time to Visit

Navratri happens twice a year — Chaitra Navratri (March/April) and Sharad Navratri (September/October). During both periods, the Harsiddhi temple becomes one of the most vibrant religious sites in all of Madhya Pradesh.
