Special Occasions at Both Sites

Mahashivaratri – The Most Important Day

Mahashivaratri — falling in February or early March — is THE festival for both Omkareshwar and Ujjain. At Mahakaleshwar, the queue stretches for hours and the atmosphere is electric. At Omkareshwar, the island fills with devotees from across MP. Both are extraordinary experiences — but they require booking 2–3 months in advance.

Shravan Month – The Month of Shiva

The entire month of Shravan (July–August) is considered especially sacred for Shiva devotees. Both temples see significantly increased crowds and heightened spiritual energy throughout the month. Many devotees make multiple visits during Shravan. The monsoon landscape of the Narmada at Omkareshwar during Shravan is breathtakingly beautiful.

Karthik Purnima – November Full Moon

On the full moon of Karthik month (October–November), thousands of lamps are floated on the Narmada at Omkareshwar and on the Shipra at Ujjain. This deepotsav (festival of lights) turns both rivers into rivers of gold. One of the most visually extraordinary nights of the year at both destinations.

Our Recommendation for First-Time Visitors

If you are visiting Ujjain and Omkareshwar for the first time, choose November through January. The weather is ideal, the crowds are manageable (except during specific festivals), the boat ride at Omkareshwar is in full operation, and the Bhasma Aarti slot availability is better than February and March. You will have the most complete and comfortable experience.
